We have all been there at some time in our lives: We have started a new job that brings with it a rollercoaster of emotions.  At first you feel like you have zero idea of what you are doing, or even what you should be doing.  You are lost trying to figure where to find information you need, or exactly what the protocol is for using the breakroom microwave and coffee machine.  But soon, you get your feet underneath you and your confidence improves with each new day.   As a result, you start to receive praise from your colleagues on what great job you are doing.  From that point on (weeks or months) maybe the accolades come less often and you begin to wonder when the last time was that you were called a “lifesaver” and was commended for a “job well done.”  Cue the panic and dip in the rollercoaster.  We all experience something similar to this.  Getting comfortable in your job usually results in fewer compliments from your supervisors – which, unfortunately, can make you feel like you’re not as great as you once thought you were, or even worse, actually stagnating in your position.  But, rest assured, that’s likely not the case.  So here are, for what it’s worth – a few signs that you are an excellent employee, even if you don’t hear it on a routine basis. 

1.  You are receiving more feedback:  Yes, at first this seems counterintuitive.  Shouldn’t you be receiving more praise and less feedback if you’re doing well? Think of it this way:  You’re performing at such a high level that your supervisor wants to give you the tools, resources, and constructive criticism you need to become even better.  You have set the bar high for yourself, and now it’s your supervisor’s job to continue challenging you.  Don’t automatically assume that feedback is a bad thing.  It may very well be an indicator that you’re exceeding expectations.

2.  You are the Go-To Resource for Questions:  When your supervisor and colleagues have questions or run into problems, you’re typically the first person they turn to for help.  Why? Because they trust you and your professional expertise. 

3.  You are Asked for Your Input and Opinions:  Your supervisor and colleagues asking you what you think during discussions and meetings should be seen as a positive indicator that your thoughts and ideas are valued. 

4.  Your Supervisor Depends on You:  How often do you hear this:  “Can you please handle this for me?”  The fact that your supervisor trusts you enough to rely on you is a good sign that they see you as an asset to the team.

5.  You are in Charge of Your Own Work:  When you are being allowed to take ownership of projects, with limited to no micro-management, you can feel good about the fact that you’ve proven yourself enough to earn your supervisor’s unquestioning trust to get things done accurately and on time. 

6.  You are Asked to Represent Your Work Unit/College:  You are asked to attend a meeting with other personnel and work units both inside and outside of the College.  You are relied upon to represent interests and College goals with confidence. 

When you become more comfortable in your College role, the praise you receive may slow down.  It’s natural, but it still may plant seeds of doubt in all of us.  Instead of worrying about what your supervisor might be thinking, keep your eyes peeled for these signs.  Chances are, you’re still knocking things out the park.
