Allison Burkette

Research

As a linguist who specializes in sociolinguistics, my research centers around language variation and change, a subject that I approach from both a large-scale historical perspective using data from the Linguistic Atlas Project and a smaller-scale perspective that focuses on identity-making within individual interactions. My books Language and Material Culture (2015) and Language and Classification (2018) reflect my ongoing interest in the relationship between variation in language and material culture, while the textbook that I co-authored, Exploring Linguistic Science (2018), advocates a view of language as a complex system, with an emphasis on interaction and emergence.
